Inside The Century-Old California Farmhouse

Built in 1917, the farmhouse sits among trees and gardens on roughly 10 acres in Toro Canyon, between Montecito and Carpinteria.

Ellen and Portia’s renovation preserved the property’s traditional design while introducing updated interiors and modern amenities.

A wraparound screened porch overlooks a lavender field, while a sunroom is placed at the back of the house. Both are positioned to take in different angles of the home’s mountain and ocean views.

Across from the main house, a detached historic barn has also been updated and repurposed, with part of the structure transformed into a creative studio alongside additional guest accommodations.

Despite the already large size of the home, there is still room for the estate to grow. County approvals include plans for a roughly 1,200-square-foot ADU, while a separate proposed 900-square-foot expansion would add a primary suite and another bedroom to the main residence.

10 Acres Near the Coast

Outside, expansive lawns extend from the house toward a swimming pool and spa, with gardens and open acreage filling out the remainder of the property alongside a park, tennis court, and two fenced turnouts for horses.

Final Thoughts

For DeGeneres and de Rossi, the property was one of many homes they have purchased, redesigned, and eventually passed on to another owner.

Their relatively brief stay nevertheless became part of the farmhouse’s century-long evolution, taking a property built in 1917 and reshaping it for modern California living.

Now asking $14.75 million, the estate offers its next owner that updated historic home along with the space and flexibility of a 10-acre coastal property.
