The Late Bud Knapp’s Colorado Ranch Lists For $66.5 Million

One of Colorado’s most significant private ranches has hit the market for $66.5 million. Known as Knapp Ranch, the 287-acre property was owned by the late Bud Knapp, founder of “Architectural Digest”, and remained under the stewardship of the Knapp family for more than three decades.

Located in the Vail Valley, the ranch was developed with a vision of recreating the rustic character of the region’s 19th-century pioneer settlements, with builders instructed to use traditional methods and tools wherever possible.

Just 15 minutes from Edwards and within easy reach of Vail’s ski resorts, the property balances seclusion with accessibility.

Knapp Ranch Architecture

Widely regarded as one of the Vail Valley’s landmark properties, Knapp Ranch was carefully developed to reflect the history and character of Colorado’s early settlements.

Log structures, stone detailing, sod roofs, and traditional construction methods were employed throughout the property, creating a collection of buildings that feel rooted in the landscape.

That attention to design is, of course, unsurprising, given Bud Knapp’s background as the founder of “Architectural Digest,” which helped to infuse the ranch with an appreciation for architecture, materials, and craftsmanship that remains evident across every structure on the property.

A Multi-Structure Compound

At the center of the ranch sits a main lodge encompassing more than 13,000 square feet. Designed for entertaining and extended family gatherings, it includes multiple living areas, offices, a theater, a billiards room, a wine cellar, and an English-inspired pub.

Beyond the main residence, the property includes a guest and caretaker house, and four standalone cabins, including the Marmot Lodge, which serves as a central gathering space.

A Look at The Land

The ranch’s setting is as compelling as its architecture. Positioned below New York Mountain, the property borders thousands of acres of protected land within the White River National Forest and Holy Cross Wilderness Area.

Nearly three-quarters of a mile of West Lake Creek flows through the ranch, supported by valuable senior water rights and a network of enhanced ponds and aquatic habitats.

Mature wildlife corridors, private trails, and open meadows create spaces for fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and exploring directly from the property.

A Few of Our Favorite Spots

Beyond the architecture and land, Knapp Ranch is filled with thoughtfully designed spaces that capture the property’s rustic character.

From gathering around a fire to preparing meals in a handcrafted kitchen, these are some of our favorite spots on the ranch.

Rustic Kitchen

Designed to feel as though it has been part of the ranch for generations, the kitchen combines rugged materials with artisan craftsmanship.

A substantial brick fireplace anchors the room, while hand-finished cabinetry, timber beams, stone countertops, and copper pots reinforce the cozy cabin design.

Covered Outdoor Patio

One of the best places to take in the surrounding mountain landscape is the covered outdoor patio. Constructed with massive log beams and railings, the space functions as an open-air living room overlooking the forest.

Seating areas are arranged beneath the vaulted timber roof, allowing guests to enjoy the fresh mountain air while remaining sheltered from the elements.

Comfortable seating creates a quiet place to enjoy a morning coffee or unwind at the end of the day while surrounded by the sights and sounds of the forest.

The Lasting Legacy of Knapp Ranch

Large ranches come to market regularly throughout the American West, but few offer the combination of architectural significance, natural beauty, and proximity to world-class amenities found at Knapp Ranch.

For more than 30 years, the Knapp family has shaped the ranch into a one-of-a-kind retreat that celebrates both Colorado’s history and its landscape.

However, after Knapp’s passing last year, his son Aaron says the family is ready to part ways with the property and hopes to find a buyer who can appreciate its legacy, craftsmanship, and extraordinary setting.
