Tim Burton Lists 18th Century English Estate For $6 Million

Tim Burton has always gravitated toward the fantastical, but now, the director known for creating entire worlds on screen is preparing to close the doors on one of his most real-life movie settings.

The filmmaker has listed his historic 1741 Oxfordshire estate, known as Mill House, for £4.5 million (about $6 million), signaling a poignant departure from a place long intertwined with his personal and creative life.

Purchased in 2006 with then-partner Helena Bonham Carter for £2.9 million, the Georgian-era property once served as a country guesthouse for British Prime Minister H.H. Asquith.

Over the past two decades, it has been transformed into a character of its own, part pastoral idyll, part gothic reverie, with riverside views and winding gardens that seem to have inspired some of Burton’s work.

Historical Conext About Sutton Courtenay

Tim Burton’s Mill House estate is located in the historic village of Sutton Courtenay, Oxfordshire. The estate sits on the site of an old water-powered paper mill called Sutton Mill, which produced special paper for Bank of England banknotes in the late 1600s and early 1700s.

The house itself dates from the 18th century and retains elegant Georgian features alongside Burton’s l personal touches, such as hand-painted dinosaur statues in the garden.

Sutton Courtenay is a village rich in history, with roots going back to Saxon times. It was once part of Berkshire before boundary changes placed it in Oxfordshire. The village is known for its historic buildings, including several Grade II-listed homes like Mill House, and its connection to notable figures such as Asquith and now Tim Burton.

The village offers a quintessentially English countryside setting with scenic river meadows and a strong heritage that complements the character of Burton’s estate.

Inside The Property

While not much is shown about the home except for listing photos via Savills, the YouTube Channel Ever Luxurious shared some unique stories behind Burton’s dinosaur garden and what appear to be a few looks from inside the fence.

Why Sell?

With properties still in London and Los Angeles, Burton appears to be shedding excess geography as he prepares for one of the most prolific stretches of his career in years.

He’s currently immersed in production on the second season of Netflix’s Wednesday and will soon step into the spotlight for an upcoming four-part documentary chronicling his creative journey.

Leaving behind the English countryside may seem like a dramatic pivot for someone so associated with shadowy forests and whimsical estates, but for Burton, the move reflects a shift in pace.

A Home With Its Own Legacy

What Mill House offers the next owner is a peaceful retreat from a busy life in the immersiveness of nature. This is a home with luxury and personality, shaped over centuries and steeped in stories.

From its political past to its place in Burton’s unconventional narrative, the estate exists at the intersection of English tradition and artistic creativity even as it changes hands.
