Dakota Johnson Sells West Hollywood Home For $6 Million

Dakota Johnson has sold her West Hollywood home for $6 million, having found a buyer for the restored modernist residence just one week after it was listed.

The actress purchased the home in 2016 with earnings from her breakout role in “Fifty Shades of Grey”, paying $3.55 million before collaborating with acclaimed interior design firm Pierce & Ward on an extensive renovation.

Johnson famously referred to the property as her “tree house” thanks to the dense canopy of mature trees and bamboo surrounding the home.

Stepping Inside The Living Room

Inside Johnson’s tree house, the living room reflects the home’s signature palette, with warm wood finishes, poured concrete, expansive wood-framed glass walls, and a seating area made up of large sofas and vintage-inspired furnishings.

Dining Room

Just beyond the living room, the dining room continues the home’s warm modern design with a glass-top dining table surrounded by mid-century-inspired seating.

A built-in credenza stretches across one wall beneath a curated display of artwork, while clerestory windows and full-height wood-framed glass open to outdoor dining areas surrounded by greenery.

Chef’s Kitchen

A few steps away, the chef’s kitchen features olive-green cabinetry, Carrara marble countertops, and a white subway tile backsplash.

Premium stainless steel appliances, glass-front upper cabinets, and a skylight above the sink brighten the compact workspace.

Off to the side, a breakfast nook creates a more intimate place for everyday meals, with a round dining table surrounded by woven cane chairs beneath a sculptural pendant light.

Primary Suite Closet

Amongst the private spaces in the home, the primary suite’s spacious closet is a highlight. It’s lined with floor-to-ceiling wood cabinetry, open shelving, and mirrored wardrobe doors.

A skylight overhead fills the space with light, while dedicated storage for clothing, shoes, and accessories transforms the closet into a boutique-style dressing area.

Primary Suite Bathroom

The suite’s bathroom has a brighter design with a freestanding soaking tub placed in front of a door opening to the pool deck, which is framed by matching marble-topped vanities and large mirrors.

Johnson added a personal touch to the bathroom by painting the cabinetry in a soft pink shade inspired by a sweater she owned from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s luxury fashion label, The Row.

Library and Office

Elsewhere in the home, the library and office once again feature the rich wood-paneled walls, this time accented by floating bookshelves, framed photography, and a long desk.

Outdoor Space

Outside, the gated property unfolds into a collection of outdoor spaces surrounded by tall trees and lush landscaping that provide plenty of privacy despite the home’s central West Hollywood location.

In the center of the backyard, a long swimming pool runs alongside the house, bordered by wood-framed glass walls and greenery.

Spread across other corners of the outdoor spaces are stone patios that offer areas for lounging and outdoor dining, a built-in barbecue, a fire pit gathering space, and stretches of lawn that soften the home’s lines.

Final Thoughts

After purchasing the home with earnings from “Fifty Shades of Grey”, Johnson spent the last decade carefully transforming the residence into the treehouse-like home she had always envisioned.

At one point, she even admitted she couldn’t imagine ever selling the property because she loved it so much, making its quick sale all the more unexpected.

While she hasn’t publicly shared what prompted the move, reports emerged last fall that she had purchased a new home in Los Angeles’ Outpost Estates, closing the chapter on one of the city’s most thoughtfully restored examples of California modernism.
